A Dutch shipping historian has advised that the newly built CELEBES was confiscated by the Germans at her Amsterdam shipbuilding yard on 12th August 1941, departing for Germany on 5th November to serve as an auxiliary vessel for the "Kriegsmarine". She was heavily damaged in a British air raid on Cuxhaven in March 1945 but returned to the Netherlands for repair, returning to commercial service as CELEBES on 14th November 1946.

This is the ship that collided with the Texaco Caribbean off Folkestone on 11 January 1971 leading to the eventual loss of the Texaco Caribbean, Brandenburg and Niki and the loss of 51 lives.
