The pilot steps onto the gangway and then it is heaved up to the level where the pilot ladder ends there he steps over onto the ladder and climbs the rest,,,still high enough though !!!

Especially if he forgot something :)

A draught of 9 m seems to be to little, either 19m...

Impressive, in some perverse way...but also damned ugly it must be said.....&.. You'd have to say that consideration for the crew was the last thing on the designer's mind.
Looks like a barge with a night-watchman's hut tacked on!
