I've visited Alexsandr Pushkin many years ago but I have never even seen her as Marco Polo. However, I did sail on Mikhail Lermontov, the last one of the class, in 1979 and she was then just 7 years old. It was hard indeed to think of her as an almost 'new' ship. She was tired shabby and hugely outdated and there were aspects to her design and layout that just left you thinking "Why?" Was it then any wonder that after the rebuilding of the Alexsandr Pushkin into Marco Polo Gerry Herrod (owner of Orient Lines) said "It would have been cheaper to have built a new ship!" So Phil, I really do not think that you have anything to fear with regard to the Soviet/East German build quality. I think the basic structure was and is, sound. And from Mr Herrod's statement I fully expect that all the junk and rubbish was got rid of long ago. Hence the ship continues to sail and enjoy enormous popularity. Oh, and yes, that's a super photo of her.

Thanks Derek. She's very popular and I know others who are fans, as you are :-)

She's clearly in good nick and SOLAS 2010 compliant but, in general, Soviet merchant ships were never renowned for build quality. It's just an irrational fear that puts me off I suppose.

It's amazing that a ship can survive in almost the same general layout over the decades! No additional ugly decks, no sponsons, no duck tails, no balconies...GREAT!

Great shot Phil,

I can inform she is in good condition on board too. I enjoyed a great cruise on her last October and could not fault the ship or the crew in any way. She will not be for everybody of course but I would not hesitate to book another cruise on her.

best regards
Derek

I remember her maiden voyage as ALEKSANDR PUSHKIN at Montréal in April 1965. She was a regular caller to the port until 1980. She still looks pretty good at age 48!!!

Great shot. Beautiful lines and splendid to look at. She is simply stunning.

Thanks for the comments guys. She's a nice traditional-looking ship but, having travelled on larger, modern cruise ships I have to say that the thought of cruising on a 48 year old vessel doesn't appeal to me a great deal. Marco Polo has her many fans though!

What a lovely lady. She is by far -my opinion- lot more stylish then those big ladies we use to see now; that is defenitively my kind of cruise ship..if ever i had the luck to go for a cruise.
Greetings, thanks a lot to share, robert08

Absolutely John. I'm sure I've got a photo somewhere of the Lermentov swinging off the Landing Stage at a very similar angle. Back then I think it was two tugs but today only one.

Takes you back then Phil. We used to watch this very one, and the Lermontov do the very same thing back in the early 1980's. It's nice to see that some things haven't changed :-)
Best Regards

Thanks Ken. It's been a long time since I've seen a cruise ship swing off the Landing Stage.

Thanks very much Jens. She is indeed a lovely looking ship and one of the last of her era still in service. Good luck with getting her in the Kiel Canal later this year
