@Niels..That "thing" is the Gangway and pilot ladder...I think the elevator goes down to that level..So that's why it's there. The pilot can climb to the top of the ladder and take a lift up the rest of the way.

And a question (which may have been dealt with previously?): What is the "thing" just to the right of the MAERSK LINE text on the hull? Rgds Niels
