I've sailed on ships with a "split house" like this, though not this particular one. It was very awkward because the galley was in the stern, so those of us living in the forward house had to go all the way aft every time they ate their meals. The weather deck was very dangerous at sea or in port, it could also be very messy when working cargo, and seas might be breaking over it when underway. The only alternative was to go through a small tunnel on either side, beneath the main deck. Another issue was that the forward house was so close to the bow that, in heavy weather, seas often broke right over the bridge, and sometimes even smashed in the bridge windows and flooded the wheelhouse.

What a brilliant surprise! I had never heard of this vessel nor seen the likes of her, but the stern area of accomodation & poop, plus the mall stove pipe funnel suggested it might be concerned with Daniel K. Ludwig and his National Bulk Carrier company.
And so it appears, here.... http://nashbulk.steamcheng.net/argyll.html
Fabulous shot Paul. Thanks.
Rick
