The Frementle Port Authority has told me "The up/down platform is a man overboard recovery system. It is unique to pilot boats and is on pilot boat Paddy Troy as well. It is hydraulically operated and is used if anyone is overboard. It is used for search and rescue and also for flotsam recovery eg. timber floating in the water."
