|REGATA TO PALAGUZA (ca. 1925-30) - from Komiza - island Vis (Croatia). This is a very rare photo indeed. The unique fishing boats used were called "Falkusa" - about 7m L.O.W. and 3.5m beam, 4-6 oars, and lateen sail. A regata (race) was held at the begining of the fishing season as to which outfit will claim the best fishing ground (e.g. the boat that gets to Palagruza first gets to choose the best spot. My dad Jakov started his maritime career on one of these when he was 14 years old, as did many others. |

That's a very interesting picture, alright, thanks for sharing it. Many fishermen from what became Yugoslavia came to the Pacific Coast, mostly Puget Sound, where their descendants are still fishing.
