Description:

German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper in Norwegian Waters together with battleship Tirpitz and some destroyers.

Probably leaving Trondheim on 02.07.1942 and heading northwards for Vestfjord, Narvik. Three of the four escorting destroyers are visible. The names of the destroyers should be "Z6 Theodor Riedel", "Z10 Hans Lody", "Z14 Friedrich Ihn" of the 1934A class and "Z20 Karl Galster" of the 1936 class. Unfortunately I have no idea from which one the picture was taken. Z6, Z10 and Z20 ran aground shortly after and had to be dismissed for repairs.

(The picture was a present from Peter Behrens (Plön, Germany: http://www.shz.de/lokales/ostholsteiner-anzeiger/peter-behrens-hat-benzin-im-blut-id164257.html) whose father in law took the picture during his service with the Kriegsmarine in Second World War.)

Unfortunately I´m not able to set the correct date since the website does not allow any date before 1953.

My source is german docs - KTB (war diary) of TIRPITZ and ADMIRAL HIPPER. I can give you reference to NARA for it if you wish. IHN and LODY has problem with machines and come separately.
Weather at 2.7 was rainy with moderate visibility and low cloud, sea 1-2. On 5.7 clouds was high, visibility good, sea 0-1.

Another possible position would be 68°28'08,58'' N; 16°06'45,47 E.

I might add that the weather was describe in the book to be rather bad - choppy sea and rainy squalls. But due to the camouflage Igorr has to be right. It must be during Operation Rösselsprung as you can see here: http://kbismarck.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=468&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=15 If he is also right that the picture might show the ships inbound Altafjord i´d make a guess that the position is somewhere around 70°12'45,48''N; 22°50'55,70''E. But just somebody from Norway, maybe fisherman form Alta or a skipper from the Hurtigruten could tell us for sure.

@ Peter & Igorr : Well in the book "Deutsche Kreuzer im Zweitenweltkrieg, Mike J. Whitley, Motorbuch Verlag 2001, ISBN 3-613-01207-3" (Original: German Cruisers of World War Two, M. J. Whitley, 1985, Arms and Armours Press Limited) on page 167 is written that Tripitz, Hipper, Galster, Riedel, T15 and T17 (battlegroup I, admiral Schniewind) left Trondheim in the evening of 02. July 1942. So Igorr is right so far. The plan was to meet battlegroup II at Altafjord. The destroyers Lody and Ihn came from the lofoten and joined the battlegroup I on it´s march northwards. Lody and Riedel run aground in Grimsøystraumen and had to be dismissed. Does this information take us somewhere? Best Regards Marco

When TIRPITZ and HIPPER leave Lofjorden near Trondheim at 2.7.42, they have only Z.6, Z.20, T.7 and T.15 with them. DD's was 1st and 2nd in formation and 4th was T.7. As we see on photo, it made not from T-boot, so this is not 2.7 and not Lofjorden.
So i think most probable this is some stage of Rosselsprung itself 5.7.42. Altafjord, perhaps.

A stunning picture of rare quality.
Many thanks for sharing.

Many thanks for that hints Igorr. You are absolutely right! Size an shape indicate that the large distant ship has to be Tirpitz. Since there are three destroyers visible and considered the camouflage it might show the early stages of Operation Rösselsprung.Due to polar day it should have been possibly to make pictures even late in the evening. Again many thanks for your comment!

Highly possibly that ship go to operation Rosselsprung (strike against PQ-17, July 1942). So distant ship is TIRPITZ
