@ozzy76 they are trying to get a finger in there. Check out the EMSA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Maritime_Safety_Agency

@ Ted Thank you for the explanation. I just find it hard to believe that the eu hasn't got involved in the shipping business yet!!!!

This beautiful ship, originally named "Harald Jarl", built for and sailed in the coastal steamer route in Norway; Bergen - Kirkenes - Bergen, a roundtrip in 11 days, has experienced many rough seas. I have sailed as passenger a few times with her, and pictured her in Bodø, Northern Norway in winter 1969. Seeing her now as "Seerenissima" recalls good memories.

Thanks for sharing this picture Rivanj. She is one of the Hurtigrute beauties!Wish I could sail her again, but in Norwegian waters. But it is Utopia because rules there are so much stronger for passenger vessels.

Ozzy,, that is incorrect, the ships are classified by classification companies which inspect ships on a regualr basis set under guideance rules worked out by various entities of the shipping industry (owners/builders/operators and more important their overnments)), most classification companies are members of the IACS,,but some are not. The standards on a vessel are regulated through the IMO. These set regulations are impemented by the IMO "on behalf" !!!!!! of the members of the IMO. Therefore if can be very well that a ship with IMO standard is below or above EU standard. Usually is it par at the least however. Don,t forget, the IMO is NOT !!! a regulating entity but a sub-group of the UN which acts on behalf of the members. Those members are of course members who have ships and/or sips registries. But the IMO itself is only in business to implement the resolutions made by the members of IMO.

@Ozzy76
Yes, you are correct, as far as EU-Membership is concerned. But EU has - to my knowledge - set no Classification Society Stadards. They are set by the IACS.
Nevertheless - nice ship, nice photo. I saw her first in June 1995 in Alesund.

@ Kp...Isn't Croatia part of the EU??? If it is, then they have to follow the Eu standards..END Of..

@ KPRonald
Why a ship has to have a IACS classification to be in good shape. Do you know how much "not so nice stuff" happens when socalled respected classification companies which are members of IACS are in charge.?

It is a very nice shot, but shame upon the owners: Non-IACS-Classification and "Quality-flag" St. Vincent Grenadines. I wouldn't sail on her.
