Thank you again for great picture!
The story ended up in moral way - the bad guys on Polish side were convicted in 2004. The cooperation with Venezuelan authorities was slow in this case and it took over eight years(!) to prove that the only business action ever taken by the importing company was this fake bitumen transport.

Thankyou Gentlemen - I have amended the text to say that she was sailing from Birkenhead, not berthing as thought

Apparently arrived Birkenhead from Belfast 24/1/1994 and sailed on the 28th, still carrying the same containers, by then loaded with fake replacements, allowing an eventual sting in Poland when consignees finally began opening the barrels only in April. The drugs had been in 5 gallon drums sitting in the solidified bitumen. Remarkably the "Liverpool Echo" picked up on the story when the ship was in Birkenhead but kept it secret for over three months while the Customs operations in Europe continued.

No wonder UK authorities were alert - a smaller consignment had been found by Polish Customs in a container from Venezuela brought to Poland only a couple of weeks earlier by LUBLIN II (IMO 8302210)

Beautiful picture! There is also interesting criminal story behind: in this journey, having left La Guaira on 20.11.1993, the ship was carrying over one ton of cocaine, hidden as cargo, in bitumen barrels. British customs seized drugs before they were delivered to final destination in Poland. More details of the story can still be found in internet. The press notes locate the arrival to Birkenhead on 24.01.1994.
