Career
23.10.1970: Ordered as the first of four ships for Overseas Containers Ltd’s
UK/New Zealand trade. It was later decided that OCL would delay
containerising this service and the three other ships (for other OCL
partners) were cancelled.
07.01.1971: Keel laid.
12.06.1972: Launched by Mrs Gay Bott, wife of P&O General Cargo Division New
Zealand Trade Manager Mr Alan Bott.
13.12.1973: Delivered as Remuera for P&O General Cargo Division, but
chartered to Associated Container Transportation (Australia)
consortium for their Europe/Australia and New Zealand service. She
was at the time the largest refrigerated container ship in the world.
30.05.1975: Management transferred to Container Fleets Ltd.
13.06.1977: Renamed Remuera Bay when she entered OCL’s newly-converted
UK/New Zealand trade.
1981: Management transferred to Overseas Containers Ltd.
21.02.1983: Sold to Headwest Ltd, and leased by them to Overseas Containers
Ltd.
1983: Sold to Lombard Charter Hire Ltd.
12.1983: Fitted with Sulzer diesels by Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries
Co Ltd, Aichi Works, Chita, Japan. 29,610 bhp/21,780 kw.
06.1984: Gross tonnage now 41,814 gt.
28.05.1986: The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company acquired
control of Overseas Containers Ltd.
01.01.1987: Owners renamed P&O Containers Ltd.
05.12.1987: Rescued four of the eight survivors of Panamanian cargo ship Cason
on fire in high winds and rough seas 30km (48 miles) off Finisterre,
north-west Spain, landing them at Corunna.
19.03.1991: Sold to Abbey National March Leasing (1) Ltd and leased back.
12.1991: Capacity now 2,074 teu (1,201 refrigerated).
30.12.1993: Renamed Berlin Express as part of a slot-chartering deal with
Hapag-Lloyd.
18.12.1996: Lease terminated. Ownership reverted to P&O Containers Ltd.
31.12.1996: P&O Containers Ltd renamed P&O Nedlloyd Ltd (P&O interest 50%)
2002: Renamed Press just prior to her breaking up.
10.06.2002: Sold to be broken up at Jiangyin, China.
