Description:

J and C Harrison's 1958 Doxford, Sunderland, built HARPAGUS was here photographed by Trevor Jones, it is believed at Durban, in December 1969.

Lengthened in 1968, HARPAGUS was sold in 1973 to Mayamar Marine Enterprises of Greece, trading as IRINIKOS (which means peaceful) until 1980.

She then traded for the London based Intermarine Shipping Limited as VICTORY FIVE until arriving at Kaohsiung on 6th August 1982 to be broken up.

A photograph of the ship as IRINIKOS or as VICTORY FIVE is sought - can anyone help?

Hello, many thanks for your most interesting comment

having become friends with Lefteris Bogiatzopoulos of Syros who, I believe, had also served on board the IRINIKOS, I have written an illustrated article on Mavrakakis (Mayamar) for Ships Monthly magazine.

If you would like to see it will you please send an e-mail to me? [email protected]

Memories from my childhood!!I spent around a fortnight on board m/v Irinikos. It was August of 1979(or 78).She was unloading grains at the port of Salonika,Greece.I visited my father who was the ship's cook. She came from Argentina and departed for Alexandria,Egypt. She had a small accident in Dunkerque on June(?).She hit the port's dock and the result was a 2mx3m hole on the right side.Unfortunately i have no photos of her.The owner was mayamar shipping agency(mavrakakis).
