Description:

Seen at Singapore in March 1975 is JOO HONG, formerly Houlder Line's THORPE GRANGE, built by Bartram at Sunderland in 1954. She had borne the name ST.MERRIEL between 1996 and 1971 and again briefly in 1973 before being sold East.

JOO HONG had arrived at Singapore on 18th February 1975 from Melbourne via Colombo, Bangkok and Jakarta. She was next reported arriving at Kobe on 31st March via Guimaras Island in the Philippines.

Later in 1975 she was renamed PAN TECK, the in 1977 LIVA as which she finally arrived at Kaohsiung on 4.4.79 to be broken up

These kind & type of cargo ships looked HUGE at their time (even when you look today at this pic),, they looked massive, high, imposing + all superlatives ....... although their size was "peanuts" compared to today's "box" monsters of 400 x 60 mtrs.

Malcolm - great upload of a Houlder Bros. ship whose main route was London, Liverpool and UK ports and Antwerp to Argentina and Uruguay - a long way from Singapore!
