It,s the result of building ships ,never mind needed or not. There was a time where ships were ordered for the sake of selling the contracts with the yards and not with the intent of operate them really by themselves. Now a lot companies ,which are in trouble or which are already bancrupt are those who were left sitting on the contracts when the crisis hit and nobody wanted the ships anymore. on top of it,,the building craze now by Maersk /CMA CGM/COSCO/EVERGREEN/UASC and others,,for those mega boxers bringing more and more companies to the brink of bankruptcy or over the edge. Sometimes free wheeling capitalism isn,t that good and peoples only find out that it is may be not so good,,when they drive on mondays to the job and find out that the doors are closed, until then nobody even thinks about what happens with the building craze in a time when just that is a sure way that the economy stays down. With each megaboxer on the market smaller units will be out of work.
Look the S-American-North-EU market,, in 2006 I sailed a vessel of 2500 TEUS there,,now the same market is served with 6-8000 TEU vessels,, and they are way off from full, but per unit most probably still cheaper to operate.
There is a old saying in german shipping,, you make money by ordering ships not by operating them !
