Thanks for you quick reply and information.

I never knew chains were used for that purpose but guessing with the strong tides, wind and large ships, chains are needed.

Hi Dan, they are for mooring the Pride of Hull/Pride of Rotterdam ferries on the river berth. Unfortunately I hadn't taken my stepladder with me to be able to see over them!
