During state of war I can see your point. But when in peace time the vessel would go down, personally I'd rather be in a high viz. orange lifeboat rather than a battleship grey one!

Standard colour for a military vessel I'd have thought.
Isn't the overall colour of "battleship grey" intended as a sort of camouflage?: A huge blob of orange on the side would rather give the game away!
