Hi Captain TED, the lock at Newport is very rarely tidal, on the rare occasion the dock level might be a bit low and when the spring tide coincides with it. In the 10 years I have been at Newport I have only had one ship dock 'on the level'. The dock bottom is about 4 or 5 metres above low water spring level.

Hmmm,, actually, it is not that uncommon to leave the locks both side open at high or low tide and smaller ships passing through both ways, saves a lot time for them and the locks
