Ah, now it makes sense... I find myself liking these 60s-70s freighters even more for the cargo gear & all the dodgy ways to operate it! :D

On one of the pic's of her sister ( COMET - IMO 7503087 ) you can see it more clearly. Only the spanwire needs to be slacked

Hi,
in case you want to work with the big jumbo over the Stb Side , the "little one" is driven to the extreme portside against the Ps Mast. And secured with hooking the cargo block onto the deck. A little bit fwd. Now you can slack the stb span wire and you are good to go. Whole hatch is free. We chartered her as "Acritas" several times

@ enis
yes,,but then in those days ships were weeks in ports and not hrs so time and circumvent problems time consuming was not really a prority,,,Those ships were more builded and designed that they could operate in any port of the world by themselves,,what modern ship, special big boxers can claim that and also a lot smaller ones.
My first long trip was Hamburg/Rdam/LEH/Lisboa/Asia incl 6 ports in Japan and twice each Singapore and HKG,,beside elung/Surabaja/Madras/Kolkatta and back HH,,total 7 month 10 days,,today 6-8 weeks !!!! that was in 1976-77 with Paula Howaldt Russ

But still it would be inconvenient if the lighter derrick is partly lays across the hatch & it's span tackles would be in the way.

@ Denis
One can lower the back derrick onto it,s rest and pull the wires to the side and that way the fwd derrick can swing to the back hatch and work there too

This is interesting: it's possible to swing the Stuelcken HLD to aft hold but theres another derrick in there... aren't they both would be interfering with each other while handling the cargo?
