I like the analogy Luis, well said.

"I prefer to sail on a yacht-styled liner rather than on a Las Vegas type floating resort"

I know both ships and my feeling is that I prefer to sail on a yacht-styled liner rather than on a Las Vegas type floating resort. I have sailed many times on the FUNCHAL since September 1963 and over the years I have also sailed on many other passenger ships of most types and sizes and more than once I have asked myself "what am I doing here ? I miss my FUNCHAL"... All ships have their charms but some are better than others. FUNCHAL is unique, you sail on time capsule that has just been rebuilt to very high standards. On the other side, how many COSTAs and NeoCostas and so on do we have?????

Agreed Shaun! each has its charms.

Ok, given a choice between the two, I would choose Funchal, but I also like the Costa units of the Carnival Spirit class of ship for different reasons.

I suppose it depends upon whether you want to be aboard a ship or a large floating hotel. My personal choice would of course be Funchal; I like to feel the connection to the sea, I do not wish to share my cruise experience with several thousand other people and when I'm in port I want the feeling of pride that comes when you see 'your ship' and there is no way that I could ever get that feeling from the likes of the Costa Mediterranea.

@IACSman - I couldn't agree more. The level of comfort and the standard of the facilities on the modern ships is streets ahead of what was on offer on ships of Funchal's era. And external beauty becomes utterly meaningless when you are on board - it is of no account whatsoever.

If I could choose which one to spend my vacation, there is no doubt I would had taken the bigger one. I have been onboard both types, for surveys, so yes, I have seen them upclose and internally. :-)

The only thing they have in commom is the colour of their funnel.

Perhaps this contrast of ships could be another 'beauty and the beast' mrdot.
