When I said that I prefer the beauty and grace of the classic Holland America Line ships, I did not say that I will not enjoy the luxury of the new ones.In fact these mega cruisers of to-day are streets ahead in luxury from the old ones, and I can say that at first hand as I have enjoyed cruising on them, but in matter of looks and design I prefer the old timers.

Now now chaps! Calm Down, Calm Down.
We all have our points of view.....and many of the points raised here are perfectly valid from both sides.
Such as the very accurate one from Phil regarding how, in real terms, the cost of going on a cruise has fallen & enables many to share the experience.

Personally, this style of cruising would not be for me: If I could, I'd go on a regular cargo-passenger cruise from say, Europe to South America, Pacific side, to experience the Panama Canal just once more. The cost however, is way out of my league I'm afraid.
(All donations warmly welcomed.)

In the meantime, let's all respect each others views.
And enjoy the wide variety of ships available on the website: Food For All Tastes!

Harsh, Clive, Moi?

Of course there's something out there for everyone but the incessant livestock carrier comparisons get right up my nose. They're not even funny. Perhaps once, but that's all. I like a joke but, come on, if people can't find another angle with which to bash these ships, they should say nothing!

Mr English you shouldn't be so harsh on those people who do not like the mega-cruise ships. After all you can go aboard the likes of Noordam secure in the knowledge that you will be with 2 or 3 thousand other like-minded passengers all enjoying the multiplicity of on board diversions. Meanwhile, those so-called 'haters' will be away on totally different ships enjoying their cruise experience. There are ships out there for everyone and for most tastes.

I can't say I am a hater, and I do like the signature class of ships, but I do prefer the smaller, classic ships. Like the previous Noordam, now Thomson Celebration!

Totally agree Jimmy. Such ships offer a truly wonderful cruising experience which, for most people, would not have been possible 30-40 years ago.

Still, we mustn't let that fact get in the way of the haters! :-)

Thank goodness it has been thrown aside. At least the extra PROFIT means that I can afford to cruise. I really couldn't give a tinker's cuss what the boat looks like from the outside. What I want are comfort, good food and a balcony from which to get my photos.

Yes Mr.Dot a totally different design from the classic Holland America ships of yesteryear. The grace and beauty has been thrown aside in the name of more cabins, more PROFIT.

I'am sure the passengers of this new age holland america ship could care less if this is not a good looking ship, as they have all the features and open verhandas that the old ships lacked but to shipwatchers of the past, this vessel must look like a large livestock transport! mrdot.
