@ Graham
white because beside fishing they freeze the squid, like a reefer ship
the crew is 20-40 people depending size,,, 12 men cabins are the standard !!!
the black is the ink from the squid,,stated correctly.
and they stay up to 9 month at sea !!!!!

Yes Denis, I like these 'Squid Jiggers' too, and also what they catch ! The gear all folds out and looks very complicated, so you'd think there would be a large crew, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of accommodation space, specially considering the long voyages they make. A lot of that dirt on the hull is going to be ink from the squid too, which makes you wonder why they always seem to be painted white !

Although never seen such by own eyes, this is one of my favourite kind of fishing vessels after the tuna seiners.
What unites all these squid vessels is that all are dirty/rusty.

They are specialized for SQUID, also called octopus.
the sides you see and are perceived as nets are booms which lower to a 90 degrees angle to the ship to which are attached high powered lights (which attracks squids) right beside runs down over an arm a line with hundreds of hooks per line. They look like a small anchor with 6-8 arms.

Hi Gaviota, "B12494" is the vessel's port/country registration number, and apparently refers to the Taiwanese squid fishing vessel "Hsiang Hao No.6" of Kaohsiung.
No IMO allocated. MMSI 416536000.
