Description:

Campbell River, BC; August 19, 2014;

O.N.: 153299;

built 1926 by Vancouver Shipyards Ltd., Vancouver, BC;
ex Cora May (till 1943);
ex Colonel Ogilvy (till 1961);
(1943-1946) Royal Canadian Army Transport Corps;
gun station delivery/supply vessel;

rebuilt 1993 after collision with Bowen Island ferry;

vessel was built from teak wood reclaimed from the
Empress of Japan, which had been scrapped in 1926 after regular
service between Vancouver and the Far East from 1891 to 1922;
vessel's first owner was T.E. Leigh;

this heritage yacht has been Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s Flagship on two occasions;
1961: Commodore Temple Wright, who acquired this power cruiser in partnership with
Doug Maitland, who was Commodore in 1955;
1963: Maitland assumed full ownership, renaming the yacht Wanderer;
the second occasion was on the ownership of Dave Manning, Commodore in 1975;
early April 1993: Wanderer was purchased by Wolfgang Duntz;
On April 29, 1993, the BC Ferry Mayne Queen, departing from Snug Cove, BC,
swung into the neighbouring marina, heavily damaging a floating dock and
12 small pleasure craft, including Wanderer;
Wanderer's starboard side upper cabin structure was crushed but the hull itself miraculously
escaped structural damage thanks to the massive wrought iron davits on the starboard side,
which absorbed much of the impact of being hit by the ferry. It also helped that
Wanderer simply rolled over to port; the cushioning effect of the disintegrating dock
gave way on that side instead of staying firm.

L x B x D: 17.07 x 4.08 x 2.23 m; 43.89 gt.;

owner: Wolfgang C. M. Duntz, Bowen Island, BC
