Yes ilsfoto, you brought another subject into the argument, the NOORDAM of 1938. Well those were days when cruising was for the rich ., but then soon afterwards WW2 changed all that and instead the cruise ships crossed the Atlantic with the rich they were converted to troopships carrying GIs crossing the same Atlantic dodging the marauding U-boats , whist others were converted to Armed Merchant Cruisers sailing the same waters but now adorned with armament.
Regards.

You are right Emmanuel! And we have to marvel at how successful these ships are in fulfilling their role!

Shaun it is profit before beauty, we are shipspotters and not cruise company owners. So different attitude. I don't even own a bathtub plastic duckie .....so!

You are absolutely right Uwe, she was a beauty! But Noordam of 84 was my personal favourite ship to bear the name!

The NOORDAM of 84 is a much better looker than the present one Shaun, but nowadays cruise companies prefer the much greater profit from these multi deck, therefore much more cabins cruise liners. Regards.

I don't wish to argue about taste, but had you mentioned the NOORDAM of 1938 - now, she was a looker.
cheers

I am referring to the Noordam of 1984, now serving as Thomson Celebration.

You are more than right Clive, I should have written the preceding ones as the 3 of them were classics and beauties in their time as were all the liners of these eras. These modern "floating apartment blocks" ,to use what Mr.DOT coined for them were and are being built more for function than beauty. Do we have any shipspotters out there who have photos of these 3 NOORDAMs who can share add to the site. Thanks and regards to you Clive.

The original Noordam? I am wondering which Noordam is actually being referred to; the first Noordam (and therefore the original one) entered HAL service in March 1902, the second ship to carry that name for the company was delivered to them in September 1938 and then there was the Noordam that was delivered to HAL in March 1984.

Shaun ,the original NOORDAM was a classic ,this modern day namesake will not be remembered with nostalgia as the original.

I am a fan of some of the signature classes, but am not a fan of the HAL versions, especially when we compare her to the original Noordam!.

I second your comment, she is a biggy but not a beauty .A very far cry from the ex-VISTAFJORD. regards.
