Karel Doorman was the name of the ill-fated Dutch Admiral who commanded the combined fleet of American, British, Dutch and Australian warships, based in what is now Indonesia, that attempted to stop the Japanese invasion early in 1942. During the course less than three months the fleet was virtually annihilated, Admiral Doorman killed, and the few surviving warships withdrew either to India or to Australia.
