Built to replace the ill-fated Wahine on the Wellington to Lyttelton ferry service.
She was withdrawn in 1976 and returned to the United Kingdom where she was chartered for use as an accommodation ship at Loch Kishorn, subsequently going to Sullom Voe on 2.10.78 for the same purpose.
Chartered on 15.5.82 by the Ministry of Defence for service as a troopship in the Falklands Conflict, although this role was later changed to that of an accommodation ship. Blue Star Ship Management Ltd. appointed managers.
Arrived at Port Stanley 11.7.82 and remained there until 26.9.83
Upon her return to the United Kingdom, she was refitted by Harland & Wolff, Belfast, following which she arrived at Falmouth on 30.3.84 to lay up.

23.6.71: Launched for Union (nominal owner Union Steam Ship Co. (U.K.) Ltd., Great Britain), as Rangatira (London). Chartered for five years. 15.9.76: Last voyage ended. 17.10.76: Laid up at Falmouth. 9.78-6.81: Chart. to B.P. for operation as an accommodation ship at the Shetland Islands during construction of the Sullom Voe oil terminal. 1982: Chart. to U.K. Government for Falklands Islands War service. 1987: Sold to Sea Royal Ferries Ltd., Cyprus, and r/n Queen M. Later t/f to Malta. 1990: Sold to Alimar Shipping Co. Ltd., Malta, and r/n Carlo R (Valletta). Later t/f to unspecified owners, Greece. 2001: Sold to unspecified owners, Greece, and r/n Alexander the Great. 18.12.01: Sailed Naples for Bijela but suffered major engine damage during the voyage. 23.12.01: Arrived Bijela in tow of tug Aegean Pelagos where she was still lying 3.8.02 without any repairs started.
After several years previously laid up at Naples and Bijela, Alexander the Great was sold at auction on 8th November 2004 to Dido Steel Corporation S.A., Monrovia. Owners later listed as Oberon Cruise Line Ltd., St. Vincent & the Grenadines. On 18th November she was reported resold to Turkish shipbreakers for demolition at Aliaga. for US$212 per tonne light displacement.
She left Bijela on 12th January 2005 in tow of the Greek tug Hellas (606 gross tonnage, built 1975) and was due to arrive at Aliaga on 17th January.
However, during her tow she was resold by the Turkish shipbreakers to Indian shipbreakers for US$385 per tonne light displacement, providing them with a handsome profit of about US$1.3 million!
