My father worked at the Gulf Oil Refinery in Port Arthur, Texas from 1934-1975. While there in the middle 1930's he befriended a man who was he Chief Engineer of this ship. His name was Jacobus "Jack' De Visscher from Antwerp Belgium. For the next 20+ years when the ship came to town; Jack was at our house for a meal and a visit. Many times he brought his wife, Martha. They were a delight to my sisters and brother. He had a special bond with my father; who was the go-between person during the times the United States was at war with Germany; as Jack was not in Belgium when Pearl Harbor was attacked' he was immediately deverted to a Merchant Marine ship for the United States. One being the S.S. William S. Ladd, which was sank of Leyte, Philippines in December 1944. He could not return to his wife. He wrote letters to my father; and my father forwarded them to his wife and vice/versa. Our childhood was made brighter and so much interesting my a person from another country with an accent who loved our family. Jack retired and died in 1968. Martha sadly lived another 26 years alone and passed away in 1992. Their family in Antwerp wrote to us. Bless you, Jack & Martha De Visscher. Leslie Pierce Royce. Houston
