Broken up at Alang in April 1997. The builder details given are misleading - the ship was actually built by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company of Govan.

It is indeed the same ship. She started off as a troopship owned by Bibby Line, however a change of MOD policy in the 60s saw the switch to air travel.

Two of my dearest friends emigrated to Australia on this ship during the 60s. Incidentally I would like to see in "Additional Information " not just Status dead , but when and how ,if scrapped, sunk in accident ,sunk as a diving wreck, sunk as a target ...etc. This could be obtained even from the website members.

What a lovely shot of her. IIRC, the rebuild into the FAIRSTAR was done in the Netherlands.

Thankyou grwdave for reviving sentimental memories.

Fairstar (Fairstar, the Fun Ship) was a popular Australian based cruise ship operating out of Sydney for 22 years. Originally completed in 1957 as the British troopship Oxfordshire, was converted to become the Fairstar in 1964 for immigrant voyages and from December 1974 was permanently engaged in cruising.

Great shot of a very beautifful vessel. Those open side decks make her much more attactive that the varandas used today.
