At least these ships were far more comfortable than the ones in the late 19th century, as I understand. "Good old days" or the dark past, for sure sailors back then were real ones rather than now where you just press buttons & sign papers while in comfy chair. xD

I began sailing in the mid-1970s on ships built in the mid-1940s, and I can vouch for the fact that the accommodations on those old ships were definitely several levels below the more modern ships. I have no doubt that the accommodations on this one, built in 1918, must have been that much less comfortable than even the old ships I experienced. For those who went to sea on ships such as this, the "good old days" definitely weren't.

Hi there!
Built 1918 for Müller & Johnsens Rederi, Bergen as "Solvær" with yard no. 1460 from Shanghai Dock & Engineering Company at Shanghai. Renamed "Disa" in 1922, "Agnete Christensen" in 1946, "Fenja" in 1950, "Manfred" in 1955 and "Anne" in 1960. Sold for scrapping in 1966 in Gothenburg but seems to be renamed "Asfaltina" and as such reused as floating asphalt facility until finally broken up at Gotenius Varv, Gothenburg in 1986.

Hi Rene,
definetely an unique, super shot. No doubts about it.
But how did the crew see in the year 1962? An old steamer. Completely out of time. Next to non comfort what accomodation is concerned. Wages probably low. Food? Endless maintenance or emergency repairs to keep her going.... Each time when the fotos of old vessels, or the old vessels, are glorified on this site I have to look a little more deeper into it and see the social side of the people, the seamen or sailors, who worked on them. When I sailed in 1968 as ER cadet on a vessel built in 1952 we were not really proud of it. We wanted to sail on newer vessels. 1965 onwards. Modern was good!
Just to make it clear: I enjoy pics like the above one but cannot stop thinking of the daily life onboard in the "good old days"!
Nice sunday to all sipspotters and aficionados
Jürgen
