Interesting to read about a part of her life, even though a fate of war, one of the many ships torpedoed in WWI and WWII. In convoys You were not sure of being picked up even if You survived the Torpedo attack itself. Sometimes (?) special ships had the task of picking up survivors, in spite of threat of being torpedoed when stopping for pick up. It must have been a hell to be torpedoed.

At 12.42 hours on 11 Nov 1942 the Nieuw Zeeland was hit by one of four torpedoes fired by U-380 about 80 miles from Gibraltar and sank following a coup de grâce at 13.08 hours. The ship was returning from the Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa and carried 214 crew members, 29 gunners and 13 service passengers. The survivors were picked up by HNMS Isaac Sweers (G 83) (Capt W. Harmsen) and HMS Porcupine (G 93) (Cdr G.S. Stewart, RAN) and landed at Gibraltar. Thanks for Info from U-boat.net.
