I use a small Nikon compact digital camera with a 14 to 1 optical zoom.
And as Robbie says, when they are passing quite close you can get away with a standard lens . The inner channel marker seems as though it is only about 150-200 metres from the base of the hill.

I shot numerous ships at North Head at the end of last year. You can get away with using a 40mm + lens up there.

Another nice capture. Was this also taken from North Head? What length of lens are you using?
