@Jens
this one is still rounded under water and the stern is seemingly pointed,, but those Rostock yards they builded the CSAV Santos and sister,,11 of them for Hartmann, I sailed 5 of them. I think it was the Libra Santa Catharina @ Santos anchorage,,known for high swell,, when this flat stern hits the water everything shakes like crazy, on the bridge shelves flew of the walls !!! and you can,t do much when you a light loaded or ballast,,the stern is about 1-2 m above water, even with plenty ballasting you can,t make it stop,,, Really bad,, and when I see some of the smaller feeder ships where the stern is virtually flat,,it must be terrible,,a reason to not sign on on them !!!

@Patrick: That's what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation and the link.

@Captain Ted: This doesn't sound good. I assume you've been on a bigger ship when this happened to you. Must be even worse when it hits a small one like this...

these kind of sterns one sees often on small ships build in UK, and a lot bigger cont ships,,mainly in the range up to 3000 TEu have the same, one just does not notice much because the accommodation is huge. But all the sternd are square, most probably for ease of condtruction,,but terrible ffor crews on anchor and swell,, I had once both radars broken because swell hits under the stern,,like bad weather at sea,,just the impact is from the stern,,, REALLY BAD !!!!

Sadly not Jens, the last ship built was the Grampian Frontier (IMO 9141156) in 1997 (although a small trawler Caspian has the last yd no) - I did put a yard list some years ago, needs a lot of updating now - http://www.quaysides.co.uk/ydd.htm)

Thank you, John. Yes, it looks cold, but it wasn't. About 3 to 5°C, almost no wind and now and then some rays of sunshine (and some drops of rain). Wearing the right clothes you felt quite comfortable:-)

Cheers,
Jens

By the way... is Yorkshire Dry Dock still in the ship building business? So far I have three vessels in my album (Scot Ranger, Falcon and Eems Delta) which were built there, but all in the 1990s.

Built as a one off by Yorkshire Drydock here in Hull.

Thank you, Frits. This coaster design I haven't seen so far. Reminds me of a 1960's bunkering tanker here at Hamburg...
