Hi NoW: What dates were you on Palizzi then? I was R/O 1-8-81 (Malaga) to 28-11-81 (Barcelona) having done a trip for Lauro Lines the year before on Pallade. Yes, she was a nicely designed ship with a lot of ornate woodwork. Must have changed cooks though: It was a disappointment in terms of quality & quantity after Pallade! Regards.

Hi Gianpaolo, Sorry for the 2 year delay in replying! Took me a while to find my discharge book. I was on the Palizzi from 11/10/80 to 19/3/81. My first commercial ship! I joined in Panama and left in Genoa. The Italian crew were the nicest bunch of people you could ever have wanted to sail with. You must have taken over from me pretty much. Hope I did not leave the Radio Room in a mess. That German equipment - labelled in German! was really something... I was scared stiff when I first joined - never been on a commercial line before and certainly never learned German!. I can remember having to do my washing out of a bucket on the Bridge Wing.... those were the days. Can't remember the Captains name - he was a bit of a sour-puss, but we got on okay.

Ah, the Palizzi - my first love! UK Radio Operator back around 1981 - Ill have to check. Flew from UK to Panama to wait for her as nobody knew where the ship was. The previous R/O went a bit mad and locked himself in his cabin. The captain had to take his meals to him. All the radio equipment was in German - and I'd just got my license! Scared to hell and back.
Took it to the Gulf where we were impounded for non-payment of fees - the Captain sent me to try and get it released. Lovely crew and a gay cook who made the best spaghetti I have ever tasted! Very ornate stairways. No cloth washing facilities - had to scrub mine on the bridge wing in a bucket. Wish I had kept in touch.

Golden Age indeed: "Ships with Sticks" (derricks) as we called them, always had more character than the souless things they build now.
Palizzi/Lubeck had class. Comfort came as standard. And quite rightly so.
I was aboard a newbuild recently: "Tenca Arrow" Impressive true, but, a ship? No. It was like being in a hospital for the incurable!
(Tenca is here, search it out. I have photos too which I will upload when I get my computer sorted!!)
Class always shows through, despite the years!!!
Thanks again Gianpaolo.
