It is very nice that such small ships still are in use.

Thanks for your answers Gentlemen. I was almost certain this was a joke but then...!
This small coaster is a beauty.

@ Daniel & Allan: Ask the captain. Or your local german flag dealer. Internet made it possible: http://www.amazon.de/Flagge-Deutschland-Bananenrepublik-90-150/dp/B004APSI46/ref=pd_sim_auto_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0464CSWEFKZZQ3MHCA4D
But: Police and prosecutors & attorneys in some german comunities where not amused and tried to take legal action against the "flag criminals". But: Bananas on the german flag is allowed in Germany, confirmed by different courts. Hope this may assist. :-)

I believe that with the three bananas on the flag has no meaning! That it is a joke rather.

Presumably Mrs Merkel has reduced its status to a banana republic....

This little cargo ship is owned by captain Arne Möller from Husum (North-Friesland). She was formerly owned by the "Niedersächsischen Landesbetrieb für Wasserwirtschaft, Küsten- und Naturschutz" (Lower Saxony Water Management, coastal- and environmental conservation). Now she mostly is active between the north- und eastfrisian islands, carrying building materials. Pls see this nice video footage of "LÜTJE HÖRN":
