Description:

At the Pointe-aux-Trembles Anchorage in September 1970, Norse Carrier owned by Odd Gadager & Co. of Oslo and on charter to Volkswagen.
Blt in 1965 at Uddavalla, Sweden. Renamed Cesira in 1976 and Semira in 1980.
10 Feb. 1987, arrived Kaohsiung to be broken up.

Well, I'm indebted to you all: Spent most of my seagoing days on bulkers...and had never heard of them being used in this way.

As for ACL, Brent, reminded me of Atlantic Causeway: (I was on her scrapping voyage to Kaoshiung) There was a poster on board, showing a typical cargo arrangement: Included double decker buses, Yachts on trailers...you name it, they claimed to be able to Ro-Ro anything.
An amazing series of ships....half ferry-Ro-Ro & half container ship.
The foredeck though was a real corroded mess: Smashing through North Atlantic winter storms to meet schedules, really took their toll.

I remember well the standby/Fridge-container generators: They were made by Rolls Royce & had less than 50 hours on their clocks.....

(Tragically, of course, her sister ship: Atlantic Conveyor was sunk off the Falklands, 1982.)

Many other bulkers traded to Montréal and Great Lakes ports with that funnel marking including Georg Russ mentioned by Derek. She also came in my area under the name Nordstern ans also sporting the VW stack colours.

Nice photo of Norse Carrier with appropriate funnel markings. In concert with previous comment, VW Group recently displaced Toyota as largest automaker in the world and one can only imagine how many of today's modern car carriers are plying the oceans with VW's...?

With Volkswagen requiring some 300 sailings each year across the Atlantic in the sixties the bulk/car carrier was the trades primary workhorse. The first ro/ro was built in the mid sixties then Atlantic Container Line introduced drive on/off carriers to their services. But the versatile bulker remained popular for some years, especially those with removable 'tween decks so they could backload bulk cargoes such as grain and coal to the car ports in Europe and Japan.

This 1965-built bulker, in operation as car carrier, I suppose, for Volkswagen could not be very a very effective way of transporting cars, compared to newer car carriers ?!! And using long time for loading and unloading cars?!
