Trygve, TAMAROA was one of five ex-US Navy fleet tugboats commissioned into the Coast Guard, of which she is the last existing. However, several other examples of the class are still in active military service with various Navies, including two in Argentina, and one each in Ecuador, Mexico and Peru. The closest thing to it preserved in the US in COMANCHE (ex-WMEC 202), which was also a cutter converted from a US Navy oceangoing tug.

Sadly, a number of historic Coast Guard vessels have been lost in recent years, including the WWII convoy-veteran MOHAWK, sunk as a reef, and the Northwest Passage travelling STORIS, which was "covertly" scrapped in Mexico recently.
Kind Regards, Kyle

Nice picture, shot 26 years ago. Interesting ship. Does this type (class) of CG-ship exist as museum ship other places in the US?? If not, even I would hope that this one could be preserved, but "money rules".

The last time I saw her was in 2010 at Norfolk. Hopes were then high to save her.

Kyle...That would indeed be a sad end for such a fine vessel.....But we have to ask, how many examples can we support as Museum Pieces....It's a high upkeep. We have to draw a line somewhere. However much it hurts. And that is one fine ship.
Believe me....If I had the money......

Also, no longer operated as a museum vessel. At the last I heard, due to a lack of funds, the owners are currently working towards sinking her as an artificial reef, and if that cannot be accomplished, scrapping her.
Kind Regards, Kyle
