Description:
Inland tanker WALDHOF capsized near the "Loreley"-Rock of the river Rhine with a full load of sulphuric acid (2.377 tons). This happened on 13th January 2011 at 4.42 a.m. Two men of the crew of 4 died. Photo captured from St. Goarshausen (Rhine) on 14.1.2011. Acid pumped into the river Rhine due to danger of hydrogen explosion of the tanker. Ship lifted by three floating cranes of Mammoet (NL) on 13.2.2011. WALDHOF was repaired at Duisburg and renamed into AURIGA. Rhine closed for any shipping from 13.1. until 14.2.2011. Cause of accident was wrong filling of the acid tanks with bad stability.
Built 1993 by Damen shipyards b.v., Hardinxveld (NL), LxBxD 110,00 m x 10,50 m x 3,15 m, 2.426 tdw. Owner Lehnkering Rhein-Fracht, Mannheim.
Please note above right the Rhine tugs RHEINLAND (ENI 04200940) and RECHTINGSHAUSEN (ENI 004403440) holding the WALDHOF in the strong current of the river Rhine.
