This photo was when we pushed the Lancer class vessels to stow 5 high on dock. You can see the reduced visibility. Now 9 high and higher are common although two ships in the Pacific recently pitched 2,750 containers overboard.

Yesterday, 50 years ago, on May 31, 1968, this ship was the very first vessel unloading containers from the USA at Hamburg harbour...

I sailed on this ship 16 years later, after she she had been sold to Navierias de Puerto Rico and renamed Humacao. Note the height of the containers stacked in front of the bridge. One can't help wondering how they could see where they were going!

I sailed on her in 1980. Was told some Captains wouldn't depart due to the high container loading severely affected stability.
