Description:

Heavy lift class

The following three sister ships were the heavy lift vessels in the Safmarine fleet, also for carrying general cargo. The “S.A.Van Der Stel”, “S.A. Weltevreden”, and the “S.A. Nederburg”. were all built by a Dutch company, and entered service in the mid 1960s. The S.A. Van Der Stel could lift 250 tons with her own derricks and the other two could lift 125 tons. They were all powered by a six cylinder M.A.N K6Z86/160 low speed two stroke diesel engine, developing aprox 14,000 BHP and a speed of 21 knots. For electrical power three M.A.N diesel engines drove AC alternators.

That's quite an interesting logbook you have there Jim,did they have a large crew at that time? very beautiful design, very different from the boxy ships of today.

I sailed on the her maiden voyage , Having taken delivery in Dublin after trials . Captain Alexander Young Johnston. Loaded some nuclear equipment in Caen, France for San Juan, Puerto Rico where several of the crew were arrested and bashed up by the police for causing a disturbance in a night club. Had to go along to the Police with the Master and Agent to have them released. Thereafter proceeded to the U.S Atlantic coastal ports to load. After much flag flying and cocktail parties, we ultimately sailed from New York for Cape Town. I also sailed on the maiden voyage of S.A. Weltevreden - Captain Robin Thomson - delivered in Rotterdam and also sailed on the maiden voyage of Langkloof also from Rotterdam - Captain James Trickey. Sadly Langkloof collided with a Dutch coaster, resulting in loss of some of the coaster crew, in the icy waters of River Schelde, whilst under pilot from Antwerp 2nd January, 1964. I also sailed on the S.A. Van der Stel having joined her in Leixoes, Portugal, 13 March, 1972 after being recalled from leave and flown from Cape Town.- Captain Brian Douglass and later Captain Robert Allan. Sailed on Bosbok 1960 , South African Statesman, South African Seafarer, Drakenstein twice, S.A.Letaba twice, and S.A Tzaneen with Captain Barry Downing. Regards, Jim Pead, Adelaide, South Australia.
