This is known locally as Mid Stream Cargo operations, it takes its toll on the main vessels fittings and the hull gets some nice indentations from time to time too. Boarding is can be stressful with wire hawsers tightening and slacking off. Usually the barge crew ease off the wires so ferries can come alongside. Invariably ferries in Hong Kong come in bow first hard against the hull. Singapore they come in parallel. I prefer boarding in HK.
