The MAX WALDECK was built as an icebreaker. It was an experimental bow design ("Thyssen-Waas-Bug") fitted 1981 for assessment, at the shipyard's expence - if not successful the yard was required to remove it.

Is it common to just 'fab on' a husky, heavy bow like that for the sake of converting a previous ship design to an icebreaker? Not sure why - But I'm FASCINATED with this ship!
