Description:
Norwegian STATSRAAD LEHMKUHL is here seen at Dakar in march 1971. She had just arrived from the Canary Islands, and a few days later she headed for South America. This vessel is a 3-masted barque, and by far the largest Norwegian square-rigged vessel. She was built at Tecklenborg Werft in Geestemünde (today Bremerhaven) in 1914 as training-vessel GROSSHERTZUG FRIEDRICH AUGUST. After the 1st World war she was taken as prize by the British, and bought to Norway in 1923. The person who arranged this transfer was the director of Det Bergenske D/S (Bergen Line) Mr.Kristoffer Lehmkuhl. He was also a cabinet minister (statsraad), so therefore it was decided to rename the vessel for him. Behind the Statsraad we see a French passenger liner.
Former name(s):
- Grossherzog Friedrich August (Until 1923 Jul)
