Description:
The 1950 Oskarshamn built, Liberian flagged, PEGASUS was seen passing Portishead, outbound from Avonmouth, on the morning tide of 2nd November 1965, exactly fifty years ago today. She had sailed from Rouen on Oct 10th, arriving at Avonmouth on October 15th.
Built as VINGA for Swedish owners, she had recently been purchased from Finnish owners who had operated her as ELISE SCHAUMAN from 1959.
PEGASUS was managed by Ohlssonship Limited of Hull, it is thought on behalf of either the Estonian (?) A.Saarna or Ragnar Inkapööl.
In 1967 she was renamed ICAROS but unfortunately suffered a fire at Oran on 15th December that year while loading a cargo of esparto grass for Granton (a regular trade for this operator) and subsequently sank.
