Description:
COSCO containership Long Hai He arriving Napier 26.2.95. She was one of the early generation of container tramps, originally delivered in 1971 to Chr. F. Ahrenkiel and spending her first 10 years plying the charter market. She was initially fixed to Hapag-Lloyd as Rhein Express, then two years later became Oriental Exporter for OOCL before reverting back to her old name with Hapag-Lloyd in 1976. The 736 TEU vessel had an identical sister that had a similar career as Main Express and Oriental Importer. In 1981, both were sold to Hong Kong Islands Line that encountered financial difficulties in 1989, selling 12 containerships to COSCO in a futile effort to save the company. COSCO gained the most from the deal, renaming Green Island to Long Hai He for another 10 years service and she was broken up in China in January 1999. Her sister became Ngan Chau and then Xing Hai He until broken up in 2004.
