Description:
When the British lines transitioned their services between the U.K and east coast of South America to container, they graduated the vessel sizes upwards beginning with small 422 German charters. In 1983, these were replaced by 531 TEU vessels chartered from Hamburg-Sud, with the Monte Sarmiento taken over and r/n Avon. She was built in 1976 as the conventional cargoliner Santa Rosa, and in 1978 was widened and converted by the Lubeck shipyard to carry containers, and entered the New Zealand / Caribbean trade as Columbus Tasmania. In 1980 Hamburg-Sud switched her to their South America / Europe trade and renamed her Monte Sarmiento before letting her to Royal Mail for a 3 year charter. She returned to New Zealand trades in 1986 as Columbus Canada, and was later flagged out to the Tonga subsidiary. In 1991 she was sold to PIL and r/n Kota Suria for 12 years further trading in the east, ending when she arrived at Alang for demolition in May 2003.
