United States Lines’ second series of fully-cellular container ships wre converted from some of the line’s own, older, general cargo vessels. AMERICAN ARCHER was converted in 1970 from Type C4-S-1a, PIONEER MIST (ex-PENINSULA MARINER).
By today’s standards the ‘A-class’ conversions had a tiny container capacity and it was logical that they should be the first to leave the USL fleet when the new, Korean-built, 4,000+ TEU class started to come on-stream.
AMERICAN ARCHER went to breakers at Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 1986, arriving there 13th May
Photographed departing Rotterdam 1981
Former name(s):
- Peninsula Mariner (Until 1956)
