Description:

Last time I saw this negative was in 1988, until today. I never made a print, and it really bothers me that I cannot identify the ship. I have done all the tricks with lighting up the shadows, but still the name does not come out as readible. It is one of those things that you have to see immediately or not at all. I have ideas, but what I caem up with does not match any ship in my database.

Edit: The smudge on the U and the C made the true name hard to guess, but I am pretty confident that it is OCEAN SUCCESS and contrary to what I mentioned below, the TAKATORISAN MARU was owned by MOL and not NYK.

Ah, I see what you mean. Looking at the name again very carefully, it all makes sense now :-)

Thanks Phil, but as i said, the the second part of the name has some characters not visible, while the OCEAN and SUCCESS parts are very closely written together. So it looks like the first name is longer than the second, but in reality that is not the case.

I hope you are enjoying your holiday, Pieter. Can OCEAN SUCCESS really be correct? I can see only four characters in the last name.

One of my initial theories was OSAKA MARU (also owned by Ocean Tankers) but this name was not carried until 2001.

Ilhan, I think you put me on the right direction. The shot came from one of my last B&W rolls I ever shot, and that was around 1989. At that time the Mitsubishi built NYK tanker Takatorisan Maru was already named OCEAN SUCCESS and part of the vast Ocean Tanker fleet. Her funnel colours are red with a black top. (Most other Mitsubishi tankers of this size had a smallr superstructure, with additional bridgewing supports, I could only find 4 of them with the design of the Afran Horizon. I have some other shots of the Ocean Success and they look like a good match to my shot.

Thanks all for contributing. and apologies for reacting so late, I have almost finished my two weeks of skiing holidays.

MOL funnels are usually plain red. No black/dark top.

Place of the vessel is Europoort Vopak Terminal Jetty 1 East , but around what year was the picture taken in 1988 or before ??

It can be that the funnel is red. Then she belongs to Mitsui (MOL).

Actually, the more I look at it, the more it looks like MARS rather than MARU. However, I can't find a tanker that would fit.

Pieter, I think the last part of the name is MARU. Does anyone recognise the funnel as being that of a Japanese owner?

So what did you come up with, Pieter?
