Launched from the yard of Wm Denny & Bros of Dumbarton on November 28th and then towed to Whiteinch for the installation of her engines which were ordered by Union Co. earlier in 1921.
On March 27th she was delivered and was to be the first motorship in N.Z. waters. She attained a speed of 12.44knts on her trials.
She was designed as a general purpose vessel and even capable of carrying horses. She was to be used on the trans-pacific run and Europe if needed.
Taken over by the Ministry of War Transport but remained on the North American routes.
Her run was changed to Sydney-Colombo-Aden-Port Said-Haifa leaving Sydney for Colombo via Fremantle but on July the 12th she was captured by two Japanese raiders in the Indian Ocean, the Aikoku Maru and the Hokoku Maru, both of Osaka Syosen. She was their 3rd victim, & was taken to Penang where she was renamed Teifu Maru. Then on to Singapore where the deck crew were sent to Changi. The engineers were retained to work the old diesel engines which the Japanese could not understand and which were persistently being sabotaged by the crew. She was sent to Japan where her machinery was completely overhauled and worn out parts replaced. This took months.
In November after eighteen months after her capture she became the transport Hoki and made 1 trial coastal voyage. After this the Union Company Engineers were removed.
She loaded coal on January 21st at Yokohama and sailed for Truk in February. On February the 17th whilst enroute she was bombed and sunk by U.S. carrier aircraft south of Formosa.
