Clyde, in answer to your question; in my youth I would often spend days at Birkenhead docks while avoiding school and I remember you could stand on the edge of the lock and scribble your name down the side of a ship. They are that close!

Thanks Clyde. The vantage point is on the corner of the entrance to the lock so vessels do come close. The photo was only slightly cropped.
