Clyde, in answer to your question; in my youth I would often spend days at Birkenhead docks while avoiding school and I remember you could stand on the edge of the lock and scribble your name down the side of a ship. They are that close!

Thanks Clyde. The vantage point is on the corner of the entrance to the lock so vessels do come close. The photo was only slightly cropped.

Thanks Volker. Although Birkenhead docks are a shadow of their former selves you still get the occasional interesting visitor.
