Description:

The barge DE SAL CINCO is one of a number of similar barges owned by Transportadora de Sal SA de CV, and shown at her home port of Guerrero Negro in Baja California del Sur, Mexico. Salt is evaporated from sea water at this plant, then shipped by barge to Cedros Island, where bulk carriers load it. I can't find much about these barges, but they're about 100 meters in length, have a spoon bow and a notched stern, and are said to carry 6500 tons of salt each, so it takes some 20 barge loads to fill an awaiting bulk carrier. Although these barges are reminiscent of LST hulls, I'm sure that barges don't last more than a decade or two when carrying damp salt.

I'm inclined to think they're not; this form of spoon bow is frequently used on tug-barge units and not commonly on merchant ships. I wish I'd seen more of them to determine if they are all the same.

I wonder if the barges are conversions?
