Just like you said, now that maritime tradition has nearly disappeared, everything is possible with ships names. I've seen it many times that crew doesn't have any idea what the name of their ship mean, so probably those sitting in some office have even less idea... :)

Marce, the story of "MSC Mary Celeste" was just my attempt at humor, I don't think that anybody would go near that name since the well publicized and quite sensational story of the original "Mary Celeste" back in 1872... :)

With regard to "Mary Celeste", she was suposed to be a "phantom sailing ship", which according to the legend was sighted drifting with no crew on board but with the log books up to date.
May be that story was taken into account when they decided to scrap the intended name.
